Lenovo owned sub-brand ZUK today launched its second smartphone in China: the ZUK Z2 Pro. The young smartphone company has packed the Z2 Pro to the brim with the very best hardware that is available in the market right now, and as most Chinese OEMs are doing nowadays, matched it with an extremely attractive price tag.
Made of glass, the handset takes design cues from Lenovo’s ThinkPad laptops and features a rollcage design. ZUK says that there is a shock-absorbing layer between the curved glass backside and the metallic chassis of the handset to absorb shocks. This should make the Z2 Pro a relatively tough nut to crack compared to other glass phones that can sometimes shatter a bit too easily.
The front of the ZUK Z2 Pro is adorned by a 5.2-inch Full HD Super AMOLED display that can reach up to 500 nits of brightness. Even more impressively, it is also capable of going down to as low at 1 nit of brightness, and features 100 percent NTSC and sRGB color gamut support. The screen is protected by a 2.5D curved Gorilla Glass 3 panel. The physical home button in front of the handset also features an integrated fingerprint scanner that can be used for in-app authorisation purposes in AliPay, WeChat and Bestpay.
Under the hood, the Z2 Pro packs in Qualcomm’s latest and greatest Snapdragon 820 chipset clocked at 2.15GHz. This is paired with up to 6GB RAM and speedy UFS 2.0 storage of up to 128GB. Other specs include a USB Type-C port, dual SIM connectivity, and a 3,100mAh battery with Quick Charge 3.0 support.
The rear of the phone houses a 13MP shooter with a 1.34um large pixels and an f/1.8 aperture. It also features PDAF, Optical Image Stabilisation and two-tone flash. The company boasts that the OIS implementation on the phone is better than that of the iPhone. At the front, there is an 8MP sensor with f/2.0 aperture and 1.4um pixels.
Interestingly, ZUK has also added the ability to sync with Apple’s iCloud. This should make migrating data over from your iPhone should you switch to the ZUK Z2 Pro easier, but it remains to be seen until when this feature will work because Apple is likely to pull the plug on this feature sooner than later.
The elite edition of the ZUK Z2 Pro — the one with 6GB RAM and 128GB of storage space — is priced at RMB 2,699 (~$420) and goes on pre-order from tomorrow. The company did not announce the price of the “flagship edition” Z2 Pro — the one with 4GB RAM and 64GB of storage space, though it did announce that the handset will go on pre-order on May 10th.
