ZTE has just announced a phone in China called the “Geek”. Not making this up. It has a 5 inch 720p screen (boo!), but what makes it special is the CPU: Intel’s brand new Clover Trail+, otherwise known as the Atom Z2580. It runs at 2 GHz, but you’ll probably never know how fast it is for two reasons.

One, this device, like many other ZTE phones, almost never gets sold outside of China.

Two, there’s only one company in the West crazy enough to ship a phone with an Intel chip: Motorola. The RAZR i was launched in the UK and several other European markets, and while it was loved, it was never really a smash hit.

Look, Intel is brimming with talent, and I would love it if they schooled Qualcomm and Samsung on the SoC front, but they’re not going make any dent in the market if all their design wins come from small players who make incredibly average devices.

Call me when Sony or LG make an Intel phone, because until then I, nor you, should care.
