Google has finally given Android users the ability to send Hangouts messages from Google Now using only their voice — almost two years after the same functionality was made available for traditional text messages.
Sending a Hangouts message via Google Now is as easy as starting a new voice command and saying “send a Hangouts message,” or “send a chat message.” Google Now will then prompt you to choose a contact and present you with a text box for typing your message.
Alternatively, you can add the name of your recipient to your original command, like “send a Hangouts message to Joe Bloggs.” You can also add your message to the end of that command, like “send a message to Joe Bloggs saying pick me up at 4.”
Android Authority notes that the interface in Google Now indicates you may one day be able to choose between different messaging services — such as WhatsApp or Facebook. But for now, Hangouts is the only option available.
It seems this command won’t work on Android Wear just yet, either, but it will surely make its way over to wearables later on.
If you don’t yet have the ability to compose Hangouts messages within Google Now, you may have to wait for Google to deliver the feature to your handset. Things like this typically take some time to reach everyone, but you can be sure it is on its way.
