Android 4.4 KitKat

The Sony Xperia Z, ZL, ZR and the Tablet Z from early 2013 will start receiving the Android 4.4 update starting next month according to the company’s official support page. Hardware was not a concern for Sony as all four devices come with quad core Snapdragon S4 chipsets and 2GB of RAM, so it was only a matter of time anyway.

However, it’s a bit unfortunate that buyers of Sony’s premier flagship device from 2013 will have to wait this long to get the latest version of Android. But as is the case with any manufacturer, Sony prioritizes newer devices, so smartphones like the Xperia Z1, Z1 Compact and the Z Ultra got the update first.

But better late than never, right? So if you have either of these four devices with you right now, don’t lose hope as an update isn’t far away. As this will be a staged roll out, the update could take until the end of May to reach the entirety of the aforementioned smartphones.

As far as the changelog is concerned, expect similar changes to what we saw with the Xperia Z1 after the Android 4.4 update. This includes performance enhancements, bug fixes, a camera shortcut on the lockscreen and much more.
