Xiaomi today unveiled its Redmi 6 series of smartphones in India. The series marks the return of Xiaomi launching smartphones in India featuring a MediaTek chipset.
Redmi 6A
The Redmi 6A is the successor to the Redmi 5A which was the highest-selling Android smartphone in March this year. The handset now comes with a 5.45-inch 18:9 HD+ Full Screen display. It also makes use of MediaTek’s quad-core Helio A22 chipset which is based on the 12nm fabrication process and can reach clock speeds of up to 2GHz. Xiaomi claims the chipset allows the Redmi 6A to perform 39 percent better than the Redmi 5A while being 48 percent more power efficient.
The handset features a dual-SIM card slot, a microSD card slot, 13MP shooter at the rear with EIS and AI Portrait mode, and a 5MP selfie shooter with AI Portrait mode. While the handset lacks a fingerprint sensor, it does come with AI Face Unlock. The Redmi 6A will be available with 2GB RAM in 16GB and 32GB storage variants. It features a 3,000mAh battery and charges over a microUSB port. The 8.3mm thick handset is priced at Rs 5,999. It goes on sale from September 19th on Amazon and Mi.com.
Redmi 6
The Redmi 6 is the successor to the Redmi 5 and features MediaTek’s octa-core Helio P22 chipset running at 2GHz. The new chip allows the handset to offer 30 percent better CPU performance and 72 percent better GPU performance.
The handset features a 5.45-inch HD+ Full Screen display. The highlight of the handset is the dual-camera setup at the rear which consists of a 12MP shooter with 1.25um large pixels and a 5MP depth sensor. At the front, there’s a 5MP selfie shooter. Apart from AI Portrait mode, the handset also uses AI to offer face unlock. It also comes with a fingerprint sensor, a 3,000mAh battery, dual-SIM card slots, and a dedicated microSD card slot.
The Redmi 6 will be available in 3GB RAM with 32GB and 64GB storage variants. The base variant is priced at Rs 7,999, while the 64GB storage variant comes in at Rs 9,499. The handset goes on sale from September 10th.
Redmi 6 Pro
The Redmi 6 Pro is the bigger and more powerful version of the Redmi 6. It features a 5.84-inch FHD+ 18:9 Full Screen Display, a more powerful Snapdragon 625 chipset running at 2GHz, and a massive 4,000mAh battery. Unlike the other two Redmi handsets, the Redmi 6 Pro will be available with up to 4GB RAM. The base variant of the handset featuring 3GB RAM and 32GB storage is priced at Rs 10,999, while the 4GB/64GB variant is priced at Rs 12,999. The handset goes on sale from September 10th on Amazon and Mi.com.
All three Redmi 6 handsets unveiled by Xiaomi today are running MIUI 9.6 based on Android 8.1 Oreo. They will get the MIUI 10 update in the coming months. They also offer AI Face unlock, EIS for the rear camera, dual-VoLTE support, and a dedicated microSD card slot.
The launch of Xiaomi’s Redmi 6 series comes just before the lucrative festive season in India. Given how successful the company’s Redmi 5 series was in the country, the Redmi 6 series should do even better given that they offer more powerful internals.
