Xiaomi today announced its second smartwatch: the Amazfit. The company has made the smartwatch in partnership with Huami, the same company with which it had collaborated on the Mi Band.
The Amazfit houses a circular 1/34-inch display with a 300×300 resolution. Powered by a 1.2GHz processor and 512MB RAM, the smartwatch houses 4GB of storage, an IP57 rating, a heart rate sensor, and a 200mAh battery. The smartwatch also supports mobile payments through AliPay.
The smartwatch’s body is made from ceramic which makes it less prone to scratches, while the bands are easily interchangeable.
Xiaomi claims that its smartwatch houses the world’s first 28nm GPS chip that will consume less power compared to GPS solutions employed in other smartwatches. The company also claims that the Amazfit will be able to last around 5 days on a single charge, with the battery life dropping to 30 hours with GPS turned on.
Now, here comes the catch: the Amazfit runs on a customised OS from Xiaomi and Huami, and pairs to Android devices using Xiaomi’s own Mi Fit app. In typical Xiaomi fashion, the Amazfit has been priced at RMB 799 in China, which translates into $120. Just for comparison, a decent Android Wear-running smartwatch with a circular display easily costs north of $249.
