Back in late 2014, smartphones from Xiaomi were all the rage. Despite the smartphone market showing signs of slow down, Xiaomi smartphones were selling like hotcakes in China and other parts of Asia.
Based on its huge pace of growth back then, Xiaomi had estimated that it would be selling 100 million smartphones in 2015. Later, the company bumped that figure down to 80 million, which is still not a small number by any means. However, 2015 has been less than stellar for the company, with its products failing to set the sales chart on fire. Many analysts predicted that Xiaomi had failed to reach its estimate of shipping 80 million smartphone in 2015, which is why the company was not releasing its sales figure for the year.
Confirming their predictions are correct, Xiaomi’s CEO Lei Jun revealed through Weibo that the company shipped 70 million smartphones in 2015. This is even lower than the revised 80 million phones prediction that the company had made in March last year.
Now, compared to the 61 million smartphones that it shipped in 2014, a 9 million growth in shipments, especially for a company that sells its smartphones only in certain regions of the world, is nothing to scoff at. Nonetheless, it still falls short by 10 million from the company’s own revised estimates.
Xiaomi’s loss was Huawei’s gain, which shipped a staggering 108 million smartphone in 2015.
