In Q4 2017, Xiaomi managed to surprise everyone by taking the lead from Samsung and becoming the largest smartphone vendor in India. Three months later, things have not changed much with Xiaomi still the number one smartphone OEM in the country for Q1 2018.

The Counterpoint Research report claims that India’s smartphone market grew by 48 percent YoY in Q1, 2018, though this growth was led by Reliance JioPhone — a feature phone — which doubled its shipments during the period. Smartphone sales, on the other hand, remained flat.

On a YoY basis, Xiaomi saw its market share jump from 13.1 percent in Q1 2017 to 31.1 percent in Q1 2018. Samsung’s market share increased by 0.2 percent during the same period to 26.2 percent.

Vivo and Oppo, which grew at a rapid pace in India before, saw their market share decline to 5.8 percent and 5.6 percent in Q1 2018. Honor, Huawei’s sub-brand for selling budget devices, saw its market share increase by a modest 2 percent — from 1.4 percent to 3.4 percent YoY. The company saw its market share grow thanks to the strong performance of the Honor 7X and Honor 9 Lite.

Overall, the Indian smartphone market is dominated by Chinese brands which accounted for 57 percent of the total smartphone sales during Q1 2017.

It is perhaps in the feature phone market where things are interesting. Reliance captured 35.8 percent of the market in Q1 2018, while over a year ago, it had not launched a single feature phone in the. Samsung, which was the dominant feature phone player in India up until Q2 2017 has seen its market share decline from 25.4 percent in Q1 2017 to 9.8 percent in Q1 2018. The meteoric rise of Reliance in the feature phone market shows that despite OEMs focusing on smartphones, there’s still a major market for feature phones in India.
