Redmi S2

Xiaomi today unveiled the Redmi Y2 in India — the successor to the Redmi Y1 from last year. The phone focuses primarily on its selfie camera at the front which is powered by AI as well.

The Redmi Y2 features an 18:9 6-inch display at the front with a design that is similar to the Redmi Note 5.

The highlight of the phone is its 16MP selfie shooter at the front which uses pixel binning to capture detailed selfies. It also has AI to accurately capture a scene depending on the lighting conditions. There’s also an AI-powered portrait mode for the selfie mode which captures more details and offers a superior blurring experience compared to other phones in the same range.

As for the rear camera, there’s a 12MP rear shooter with 1.25um large pixels, and it is paired with a 5MP depth sensor used for capturing depth information. The larger pixel size does give the Redmi Y2 an advantage compared to its competition, with the camera setup on the handset similar to that of the Redmi Note 5 Pro which has been praised for its camera performance.

The handset continues to be powered by a Snapdragon 625 chipset, packs 4GB RAM, 32/64GB storage, and a 3,080mAh battery. Other specs of the handset include a fingerprint scanner at the rear, AI-powered face unlock, dedicated dual-SIM card slots along with a microSD card slot, Wi-Fi b/g/n, Bluetooth 4.1, and microUSB connectivity. The handset ships will ship with MIUI 9.5 based on Android Oreo.

The base variant of the Redmi Y2 with 3GB RAM and 32GB storage is priced at Rs 9,999, while the 4GB/64GB storage variant is priced at Rs 12,999. The handset goes on sale from June 12.
