After the ravishing success of the Redmi Note 4, Redmi 4, and Mi A1, Xiaomi today launched another new handset in India under a new series: Redmi Y. The first handset under this series is the Redmi Y1 which is essentially a rebrand of the Redmi Note 5A Prime that launched in China in September.

    Xiaomi Redmi Y1 Specs

Featuring a 5.5-inch 720p IPS LCD display, the Redmi Y1 is powered by Qualcomm’s octa-core Snapdragon 435 chipset and an Adreno 505 GPU. It comes with 3GB RAM and 32GB of internal storage. There is also a 4GB RAM and 64GB variant of the device. The 153gms heavy handset has a 7.7mm thick waistline.

The Redmi Y1 sports a unibody aluminium finish which gives it a very premium look and feel. The front of the device sports capacitive navigation keys while the rear houses the fingerprint scanner. Focused towards the selfie crowd and millennials, the Y1 comes with a 16MP f/2.0 shooter at its front which is also capable of recording videos in Full HD resolution. To ensure that your selfies come out evenly lit even low-light, the Y1 also comes with an LED flash at the front.

At the rear, the Y1 sports a 13MP f/2.2 shooter with Phase Detection Autofocus and LED flash. It is also capable of recording videos in Full HD resolution.

Other specs of the Redmi Y1 include Wi-Fi n, Bluetooth 4.2, FM radio, IR blaster, the usual array of sensors, microUSB port, 3.5mm headphone jack, and dual-SIM connectivity. The Redmi Y1 is also the first device from Xiaomi to launch with a dedicated microSD card slot. The device is powered by a 3080mAh battery which sadly does not support quick charging.

The Redmi Y1 launches with MIUI 8.5 initially, though it will receive the MIUI 9 update by mid-November.

Xiaomi is also using the Y1 as the launch platform for MIUI 9, the next version of its own take on Android. Based on Android 7.1 Nougat, MIUI 9 comes with plenty of under the hood optimisations to improve app loading times and improve overall system performance.

Xiaomi Redmi Y1 Price and Availability

The 32GB/3GB RAM variant of the Redmi Y1 is priced at Rs 8,999, while the 64GB/4GB RAM is priced at Rs 10,999. The handset will be available exclusively on Amazon and Mi.com from November 8. It will also be available through Mi’s stores, authorised retail stores, Reliance Digital, and other stores eventually.
