Xiaomi today unveiled its latest budget smartphone in China: the Redmi 5 and Redmi 5 Plus. The budget handsets from the company feature a 5.7-inch HD+ 18:9 aspect ratio display and upgraded internals compared to their predecessor.

The Redmi 5 features a Snapdragon 450 chip, 2/3GB RAM, 16/32GB of memory and a 3300mAh battery. As for the Redmi 5 Plus, it comes with a more powerful Snapdragon 625 chipset, 3/4GB RAM, 32/64GB of storage and a 4000mAh battery. Surprisingly, both phones continue to feature a microUSB port at their bottom instead of adopting the USB-C connector.

The camera setup on the Redmi 5 and Redmi 5 Plus is the same: a 12MP shooter with 1.25um large pixels, f/2.2 aperture, PDAF and LED flash. The front 5MP camera is also accompanied by a selfie flash.

Other specs of both handsets include a fingerprint scanner located at the rear, a 3.5mm headphone jack, Wi-Fi b/g/n, Bluetooth 4.1 and dual-SIM connectivity. When it comes to software, the Redmi 5 and Redmi 5 Plus run on MIUI 9 based on Android 7.1 Nougat.

In typical Xiaomi fashion, the Redmi 5 and Redmi 5 Plus offer unbeatable value for money. The Redmi 5 is priced at RMB799 ($120) while prices for the Redmi 5 Plus start from RMB999 ($150). The handsets will go on sale in China from December 12. Given how important the Indian smartphone market has become for Xiaomi, the Redmi 5 and Redmi 5 Plus should make their Indian debut within the next month or two.

It was at the beginning of this year that LG and Samsung started the trend of 18:9 bezel-less displays by introducing them with their flagship handsets. And by the end of this year, Xiaomi has managed to bring the same piece of technology to its $100 Redmi handsets.
