Xiaomi today announced its new budget smartphone: the Redmi 3. For a handset that costs just a wee bit more than $100, the Redmi 3 packs in some impressive hardware.
The handset features an all-metal construction, which has never been heard of before in a phone $100 phone. The front of the phone houses a 5-inch 720p display, while under the hood it packs a Snapdragon 616 chipset, 2GB RAM, 16GB storage space and a microSD card slot. The Redmi 3 also packs in a 13MP shooter with an LED flash at its rear and a 5MP selfie shooter in the front.
Like other handsets from Xiaomi, the Redmi 3 runs on MIUI 7. The latest version of MIUI brings with it quite a lot of new features and enhancements, including new font sizes, improved system performance and more. However, it is unclear if the underlying system OS is KitKat, Lollipop or Marshmallow.
As if these specs were not already good enough for a $100 handset, the Redmi 3 packs in a gigantic 4100mAh battery. With such a powerful processor and huge battery, the handset is easily available to give the likes of the Moto G3 and Lenovo’s Vibe P1 a serious run for their money. These handsets cost almost double of what the Redmi 3 does, and yet don’t come with such a powerful processor and huge battery.
Xiaomi will start selling the Redmi 3 in China from January 12 for RMB699.
