Xiaomi first showcased its foldable phone at the beginning of this year via a teaser video. It was widely expected the company would talk about the device at MWC 2019 but the company instead announced the Mi 9. A month later, Xiaomi is once again teasing its foldable phone via a teaser video.

The teaser video shows the Xiaomi device in an open tablet-like state from where the left and right corners of the display fold outside and it turns into a smartphone. Unlike Samsung’s Galaxy Fold, Xiaomi’s foldable device has notably smaller bezels in its smartphone form. The whole folding and transition process looks remarkably smooth in the video. However, given that this is a teaser video, it is better to take it with a pinch of salt.

So far, we have seen Samsung and Huawei unveil their foldable phone, with Samsung’s Galaxy Fold all set to go on sale from next month. The Galaxy Fold folds inside — an ‘innie’ — which protects the display from scratches. The Huawei Mate X, on the other hand, is an ‘outie’ meaning its display folds outside. From the demos shown off by both companies, the Mate X clearly looks like a more superior product and makes the Galaxy Fold look like a first generation product by comparison.

Xiaomi’s foldable device clearly looks superior to the Galaxy Fold and the Mate X from the teaser video. However, unless we see some real-life demos and the media gets some hands-on with it, it is better to hold one opinion on which company has a better foldable device. For now, there’s no word from Xiaomi as to when it plans on officially unveiling its foldable device.
