Xiaomi teamed up with Google this year to launch an Android One handset: the Mi A1. The mid-range device launched with Android 7.1.2 Nougat but Xiaomi promised to update it to Android 8.0 Oreo before the end of this year. Now, Xiaomi is just about managing to stick to its word as the company has started rolling out the Android Oreo update for the Mi A1 on the last day of 2017.
Being an Android One handset, Xiaomi handles the OS updates for the Mi A1 and not Google which explains the delay in the Oreo update making its way to the handset. The Mi A1 packs the best of both worlds: it runs stock Android but still has the underlying framework for some core Xiaomi apps to work. It even comes with Xiaomi’s own camera app which is able to take better advantage of the dual-camera setup on the device.
The Android 8.0 Oreo update will bring a redesigned Quick Settings panel and Settings menu, Picture-in-Picture, Autofill for password managers, improved memory management and optimisations to performance and power management. It also bumps the security patch level to December. The update seemingly also enables fast charging on the Mi A1 but this still needs to be verified by more owners.
Xiaomi is scrolling out the 1.1GB OTA update in batches so its not going to show up immediately on your Mi A1. Once you do install the Oreo update on your Mi A1, drop a comment and let us know how you are liking the improvements introduced in the OS.
