Xiaomi Mi 5s

Xiaomi today launched the Mi 5s in China, a slightly faster and upgraded version of its flagship Mi 5. The handset comes with a slightly updated design and ditches the rear glass in favor of a curved metallic rear panel.

The Mi 5s comes with a Snapdragon 821 chipset that is up to 10% faster than the Snapdragon 820 found in its predecessor. The 5.15-inch display on the handset is also capable of reaching brightness levels of up to 600 nits.

Besides the updated internals and design, the Mi 5s is the first smartphone to come with the new ultrasonic fingerprint sensor. The capacitive home button features an integrated fingerprint scanner that one can simply keep their registered finger on to unlock the device. There is also a ‘dip’ on the cover glass to help one easily locate the home button without looking at the device.

Other specs of the handset include 4GB of LPDDR4 RAM, 4G+ connectivity, Quick Charge 3.0 support, NFC, and USB Type-C port. The Mi 5s sports a 12MP Sony IMX378 sensor with large 1.55um pixels. Despite retaining the same size as its predecessor, the Mi 5s also features a larger 3200mAh battery.

The 64GB Mi 5s is priced at RMB 1999, while the 128GB variant is priced at RMB 2299. It will be available in four colors: gold, silver, pink, and black/dark gray.

Mi 5s Plus

In addition to the Mi 5s, Xiaomi also announced the Mi 5s Plus. The device comes with a 5.7-inch LCD display despite which it is lighter and smaller than the iPhone 7 Plus due to its smaller bezels. Besides a primary 13MP Sony IMX258 sensor, the Mi 5s Plus also sports a secondary 13MP Sony sensor that is capable of capturing photos in black-and-white. The dual camera lens setup at the rear allows the Mi 5s Plus to capture photos with better dynamic range and improved sharpness. The Mi 5s is among the first phones in the market to use Qualcomm’s ClearSight technology for its dual camera setup at the rear.

The larger display and body has also allowed Xiaomi to include a 3800mAh battery on the Mi 5s Plus.

Xiaomi has priced the 4GB/64GB variant of the Mi 5s Plus at RMB 2299, while the 6GB/128GB variant is priced at RMB 2599. The Mi 5s Plus will first go on sale on September 29th at Mi.com, Mi Home, and JD.com.
