Xiaomi today launched its 2014 flagship — the Mi 4 — in India. The handset is the successor to Mi 3 and will be sold exclusively in the country through a flash sale mechanism on Flipkart.
The Mi 4 packs in a 5-inch 1080p display from JDI/Sharp with a pixel density of 441 PPI with capacitive navigation keys below it. The display is protected by Corning’s Gorilla Glass 3 and is up to 17% brighter than the screen found on its predecessor — the Mi 3.
The 8.9mm thick phone comes with a metallic mid frame and a back cover with “grating pattern design” with 9 layers of membranes, which was developed by the company with a new In Mold Transfer (IMT) technology. It also features metallic chamfered edges like the iPhone 5s and the Galaxy Note 4.
Under the hood, the Mi 4 packs in a Snapdragon 801 processor clocked at 2.5GHz, an Adreno 330 GPU, 3GB of LPDDR3 RAM and a 3080mAh sealed battery. The 13MP rear camera has a Sony Exmor RS stacked image sensor and makes use of a 6-element lens. It has an aperture of f/1.8 with a maximum auto focus time of only 0.3 seconds. The front camera has an 8MP resolution and also uses a BSI illuminated sensor from Sony. It features an f/1.8 aperture with an 80-degree wide angle 5-element lens.
The Mi 4 will be the first handset to be released in India that will be running on MIUI 6. While the OS is still based on Android 4.4 KitKat, it has an updated UI with a flatter design and comes with a bunch of new animations and features.
The Mi 4 will only be available in White in India with 16GB of storage space. At Rs. 19,999, the Mi 4 offers plenty of bang for its price, but the low internal storage is going to be a deal breaker for many, especially since the handset does not feature a microSD card slot.
Pre-registrations for the Xiaomi Mi 4 starts from 6PM on January 28th with the device going on sale from 10th February.
