According to a report published by Business Korea, Xiaomi and Huawei are both releasing phones with a curved display in Q3-Q4. The displays will in-turn be manufactured by LG and Samsung.
Citing “MyDrivers”, a Chinese information technology website, Xiaomi is working on a curved edge phone dubbed the Mi Edge or Mi Note Edge, while Huawei’s rumoured phone will be called Mate Edge. These phones are expected to be available in September this year.
Earlier in the year, China’s Vivo had launched the Xplay 5 models which had a dual-edge curved screen, dissimilar to Samsung’s Galaxy S7 edge.
For the case of Xiaomi and Huawei, they are reportedly following the curve designs of the LG G Flex and the Samsung Galaxy S7 edge respectively. However, there is little information as to how the displays will be used. It has also been speculated that LG is designing a new curved screen for its new smartphones in the G Flex series due to their low sales, however it is unknown if the new screen will make it to Xiaomi edge phone.
Xiaomi’s edge phone featuring a Qualcomm Snapdragon 820, 4GB of RAM and a 16 MP rear camera is expected to be priced at 3,000 Yuan (US$463) and Huawei’s edge phone with an in-house-developed Kirin 950 chipset and 4GB of RAM will cost at 4,000 Yuan (US$617).
Let us know if you believe that edge display or curve display phones are the next industry standard.
