Xiaomi might be struggling in China, but the company has had a great year in India where it dominated the market with the likes of the Redmi Note 3 and Redmi 3S. Now, Xiaomi has set its eye on becoming the biggest smartphone maker in India within the next 3-5 years.
Xiaomi recently crossed $1 billion in revenues in India, the fastest ever for a company in India.
“I would want Xiaomi to become number one in overall smartphone sales volume perspective in India in 3-5 years,” Xiaomi India head Manu Jain told ET.
Considering that Xiaomi primarily sells its smartphones only through online channels in India, this is a big task. The company has tried to expand its offline presence in the country by partnering with some major distributors, but supply issues have hindered its growth. Even online, Xiaomi has been unable to catch up with the demand for its smartphones, with most of its products remaining out of stock most of the time.
Xiaomi also has high hopes from the Redmi Note 4, the smartphone that it recently launched in India. The Redmi Note 3 was among Xiaomi’s most successful smartphones in India and sold 3.6 million units in just 10 months. With the Redmi Note 4, Xiaomi hopes to sell 7 million units of the smartphone this year.
To cope up with the demand for its products, Xiaomi is planning on opening one or two new factories in India with its manufacturing partner Foxconn.
