After dominating the Chinese, Indian, and other smaller Asian markets, Xiaomi today expanded outside of Asia to Spain, Europe. The Chinese smartphone company will start selling the Mi A1, an Android One handset, in Spain for 229 euros starting from Wednesday along with Mi Mix 2, its flagship bezel-less smartphone, for €499.

Xiaomi has had plans of international expansion since the last few years but the company always hesitated to take the first step for some reason. The stiff competition from Chinese rivals like Oppo, Huawei, and Oppo and a dip in its smartphone sales in 2015 and 2016 further put a stop to its global expansion plans. However, 2017 has been a great year for the company as it has absolutely dominated the smartphone market in both China and India. The company has managed to sell upwards of 10 million smartphones in September and October thanks to its rapid expansion in the offline market in India and China along with its re-launch in countries like Indonesia, Vietnam, Russia, and Ukraine.

Xiaomi will have a substantial presence in Spain in both offline and online markets. The company plans on opening two authorised Mi stores in Madrid on November 11 and other Mi authorised partners will start selling these devices from November 22nd. In addition, it will be selling its devices through Mi.com, Amazon, Media Markt, Phone House, and Carrefour.

Along with the Mi A1 and Mi Mix 2, Xiaomi will also be selling the Mi Band 2 for €24.99, the Mi Electric Scooter for €349.99, the Mi Box Android set-top box for €74.99, and the Mi 4K Action Camera for €134.99. They will also be joined by Xiaomi’s power banks and other accessories like earphones.

Xiaomi’s future expansion plans will depend on its success in Spain. It is only after Spain that the company will think of expanding to other markets in Europe.
