Xiaomi recently teased the launch of the Mi Max and Mi Band 2 on its May 10th event. Now, the Vice President of Xiaomi, Liu De, has confirmed the existence of a Mi smartwatch, which the Chinese company plans to launch in the second half of the year.

Speaking at a conference in Beijing earlier, Liu De announced that the smartwatch does exist and is ready. Having said this, there is hope that the watch or news of it, would be more readily available during the MIUI, Xiaomi Max and Mi Band 2 release event within the fortnight.

The smartwatch would not be the first product of its kind by Xiaomi. Earlier this week, they introduced a children smartwatch priced at RMB 299 (USD 46). When coupled with the popularity of the Mi Band, it would so appear that Xiaomi is taking a keen interest in the wearables sector.

As such for now, there is nothing but speculation around the looks and design of the smartwatch and whether it is a worthwhile gamble for Xiaomi. But given their history with wearables, you can predict quite anecdotally that this gamble will pay out for them.

During the conference Liu also announced that unlike rival companies that are entering into the automobile and autonomous driving markets, Xiaomi aims to focus on Personal Electric Vehicles (PEV’s). The company also aims to shift focus to offline stores with a goal of 60 outlets by year end.

For now, are you keen on the new Mi Band 2 or would you rather have a Mi smartwatch? Let us know in the comments.
