Xiaomi’s global vice president for Global operations, Hugo Barra, today announced that the Chinese company has already sold more than 720,000 Mi phones in only 12 hours of the Singles Day sale going live on Alibaba.

Singles Day is the biggest online shopping day in the world and even eclipses Cyber Monday and Black Friday sales in the United States. Hugo Barra also revealed that Xiaomi clocked in than ¥100 million (US$16 million) sales in only 4 minutes 48 seconds and topped its last year’s total sale of ¥550 million (US$90 million) in only four hours of the sale going live.

More impressively, the company accumulated a total of RMB 1 billion (US$163 million) sales in only the first 12 hours of the Singles Day sale going live on Alibaba. With another 12 hours still left to go, the company could very well more than double its total sales and sell more than a million Mi phones in a single day.

Xiaomi was recently crowned as the third largest smartphone OEM in the world, though it was quickly overshadowed by Lenovo as its acquisition of Motorola was officially completed. Alibaba coined the ‘Singles Day’ moniker and the site is expected to accumulate total sales of more than $11 billion today.
