Xiaomi MiPad 7.9

Chinese gadget maker Xiaomi is hitting India hard this year, not only with one of its best devices, but also with a whole bunch of new “experience” stores. Later this month, the 7.9-inch MiPad will go on sale for Rs. 12,999, before the company opens up 100 retail locations across the country throughout 2015.

The MiPad is Xiaomi’s answer to the iPad mini, and in actual fact, it looks a lot like Apple’s device. It’s made of plastic rather than aluminum, and obviously doesn’t have a Touch ID scanner, but it’s still pretty impressive for an affordable slate.

It boasts a 7.9-inch display with a 2048×1536 resolution, NVIDIA’s powerful Tegra K1 processor, 2GB of RAM, and 16GB of internal storage. There’s also a microSD card slot for expansion, an 8-megapixel camera on its back, and a 5-megapixel camera on its front.

The MiPad weighs just 360 grams, and measures 9.4mm thin. At Rs. 12,999 (approx. $208) it’s very nicely priced, and you’ll be able to get yours in India on Tuesday, March 24.

Xiaomi has also announced plans to open up 100 service and experience stores across India that’ll give potential customers the opportunity to try out its devices before they buy them, and get after-sales support.

The stores will span between 500 and 1,000 square feet, and will first open up in Hyderabad, Chennai, and Bangalore starting next month. However, the stores won’t actually sell any devices, Reuters reports.

Instead, Xiaomi smartphones and tablets will continue to be available through online retailer Flipkart.com.
