Last year, Xiaomi surprised everyone by partnering with Google on an Android One handset: the Mi A1. A year later, the company has now revealed the date for when it plans on launching the Mi A2 — the successor to the Mi A1.
The second Android One handset from Xiaomi will be unveiled on 24th July in Spain. From the teaser image accompanying the invite, its clear that just like the original Mi A1, the Mi A2 is also going to focus on its camera performance.
Given the timing of the handset’s release, the Mi A2 will run on a stock build of Android 8.1 Oreo and should receive the Android P update within a few months of its official release.
The original Mi A1 was based on the Redmi 5X, and from the leaks, it looks like Xiaomi and Google are taking a similar approach this year as well. Compared to the Mi A1, the Mi A2 will feature a more powerful Snapdragon 660 chipset, 4GB RAM, 64GB storage, and an 18:9 aspect ratio display.
There are rumors of Xiaomi also launching a Mi A2 Lite alongside the Mi A2. However, whether that indeed happens or not remains to be seen.
Last year, Xiaomi used the Mi A1 to expand its operation in international markets like Spain and other parts of Europe. This year, with the A2, the company will be looking to further expand its international presence and build a name for itself in the European smartphone market.
