The Indian telecom sector is on the verge of a revolution with the impending launch of Reliance Jio. While the Mukesh Ambani-led company has been planning on launching Jio since the last few years, their efforts are finally going to come to fruition this year.
While Reliance Jio has not yet launched officially, Reliance is publicly testing the network in key markets of India. As a part of its testing, the free Jio SIM card comes with a 3-month bundle of unlimited voice calls, data, and SMS, which instantly makes it very desirable.
So, how do you get your hands on a Reliance Jio SIM? There are two ways.
Method 1
This method is the most hassle free of the two. You basically go to any Reliance Digital or Xpress Store in your locality and buy a Lyf phone. These Lyf branded smartphones are directly sold by Reliance and they come with a free Jio SIM card bundled as well. The phones are available in multiple price points, with the cheapest one costing Rs 3000. SIM cards bundled with Lyf phones are IMEI locked, so you cannot use them in any other phone. However, you always create a hotspot connection and connect as many devices to it as you want.
Method 2
The second method is a bit tricky, but does not involve any money. It requires you to have access to a high-end Samsung smartphone. As a part of its trial, Reliance has tied up with Samsung to offer free Jio SIM cards to owners of selected Samsung Galaxy handsets. This includes the likes of the Galaxy S7, Galaxy S7 edge, Galaxy Note 5, and others. You can find the full list of devices here.
If you own or manage to get your hands on any of the above devices, install the MyJio app from Reliance on it. When you open the app, you will automatically get an option to get a free Reliance Jio SIM. Follow the steps that are shown in the app to redeem your coupon code. Then head over to your nearest Reliance Digital or Xpress store with your relevant ID documents to get the SIM card. Once the SIM card is activated, you must use it on a compatible Samsung device for at least 48 hours for the unlimited preview offer to be activated. Once it is activated, you can use the SIM card in any phone that supports Reliance Jio’s network.
Update: Reliance Jio has now officially launched. You can find all details about its below:
Due to heavy rush, you are unlikely to get a Reliance Jio SIM card on the same day you visit the store. Many stores are handing out only 100 SIM cards per day and are providing customers with a token and date on which they can come back to get the SIM card.
Whatever method you decide on, you will have to visit your nearest Reliance Digital or Xpress Store to get the Jio SIM card. Your experience can vary greatly depending on the store, so if one store refuses to provide you with the SIM card for some reason, you can head over to another store. You can use the Reliance Digital store locator to find the shops near your locality.
