WhatsApp has traditionally been slow in adding new features to its Android client. However, since the beginning of this year, the official WhatsApp client for Android has received a number of new features and enhancements. Most of these new features are first rolled out to the beta version of the client before they make their way to the stable channel of the Play Store.

Continuing that trend, the beta version of WhatsApp for Android has now gained two new features: voicemail and monospace text. The former, as its name suggests, lets you leave a voicemail when your WhatsApp call is not picked up by the other party. Sending a voicemail will show up on the other person’s WhatsApp client as a voice message though. However, since the feature is neatly integrated into the calling UI of WhatsApp, and brings its voice calling feature on par with traditional phone calls.

There is now also a Call back button for the calls that you miss.

The second new feature that WhatsApp has added to its beta Android client is related to text formatting: monospace text. The new font can be activated by adding three accent (`) symbols before the text. WhatsApp earlier introduced basic text formatting options like bold, italic, and strikethrough to its client last month. This is not a feature that will be used by many, but at least something is better than nothing.
