Vivo Xplay5

Vivo today announced the world’s first smartphone with 6GB of RAM: the Vivo Xplay5. In addition, the handset also features a curved AMOLED display that has up until now only been seen on flagship Samsung devices and the BlackBerry Priv.

The display and 6GB of RAM are not the only highlight of the Xplay5 spec sheet though; the “Flagship Edition” of the handset comes with a Snapdragon 820 chipset, 128gigs of storage, and two ES9028 DACs and three amplifiers for delivering ‘HiFi 3.0’ audio quality.

The regular model packs less powerful specs, which includes a Snapdragon 652 chipset, 4GB of RAM, and another configuration of audio chips.

As for the display, both versions come with a 5.43-inch Quad HD Super AMOLEd display that is curved on its edges. The rear of the handset sports a 16MP Sony IMX298 camera sensor that is paired with an f/2.9 aperture lens, phase detection auto-focus and dual-tone LED flash. An 8MP camera with an f/2.4 aperture is located at the front for all your selfie needs. All this beastly hardware is powered by a beefy 3,600mAh battery that also supports quick charging.

Moving on to the disappointing part of the spec sheet, the Xplay5 lacks NFC, a USB Type-C port, and runs on Android 5.1 Lollipop out of the box. It also lacks any software features that can take advantage of the edge screen.

The regular variant of the Xplay5 is already available for pre-order for 3,698 yuan (~$560). There is no word on when the flagship Snapdragon 820 powered variant of the handset will go on sale, but whenever it does, it will be priced at about 4,288 yuan (~$650).  The Xplay5 will be available in gold and pink colors.
