Compared to the likes of the Samsung Galaxy S5, Note 3 and other similar devices, the HTC One M8 takes significantly longer to go from 0-100. This is pretty surprising since the handset supports Qualcomm’s Quick Charge 2.0 feature, which in theory should allow it to charge up to 75% faster than QC 1.0 based devices. Slow charging times are not bad per se but the faster they are the more they help in increasing the longevity of the battery, which should be your number one priority since the One M8 comes with a non-removable battery.

As it turns out, HTC has bundled a Quick Charge 1.0 compatible (1.5A) charger and has also disabled QC 2.0 on the handset. Due to this, the phone takes significantly longer to charge than its main rival — the Galaxy S5. Using a higher amp (2.1A) charger will not be of much help here since there is a special chip integrated into the AC/DC wall charger as well, which works in tandem with the PMIC chip on the Snapdragon 801 SoC.

HTC is expected to release an official Quick Charge 2.0 enabled charger sometime later this year along with a software update to enable it. I have not come across any official Quick Charge 2.0 supported charger from third-party OEMs so your mileage may vary with them. I’d expect a reduction of at least 30-40 mins in the charging time from 0-100 on the One M8 with a Quick Charge 2.0 enabled charger.

HTC had done something similar with the One M7 last year, when it significantly reduced the device charging times with the Android 4.3 update. On the down side, the phone got pretty warm to hold while charging just like any other Samsung phone.
