Google today updated its Android distribution chart to reflect that Android Nougat is now running on over 2.8% of Android devices out there. While still a very small percent of the total Android distribution share, Nougat has made a massive gain of 1.6 percent in a single month.
This is likely due to Samsung rolling out the Nougat update for the Galaxy S7 and S7 edge — which is among the most popular Android smartphones in the world — to most regions of the world. With the Galaxy S6 next in line to get the Nougat update, it is likely that Nougat’s share will keep on increasing at a similar pace in the coming weeks.
Lollipop continues to be the most popular version of Android out there, but its share did decrease from 32.9% to 32.5%. As for Marshmallow, its share increased from 30.7% to 31.3%. It is likely that Marshmallow will overtake Lollipop to become the most popular version of Android by the end of March or April.
Despite its age, KitKat is still running on 20.8% of Android devices out there, while Jelly Bean is also running on a formidable 10.6% of devices. Ice Cream Sandwich and Gingerbread barely continue to survive with a 1% share.
With the LG G6 and Samsung Galaxy S8 launching over the next two months along with many other new mid-range devices running Nougat, the latest version of Android will continue to make some formidable gains in Android distribution charts over the coming months.
