In a surprising move, Samsung today launched the unlocked variants of the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge in the United States. The Galaxy S7 and its edge sibling are already available across all major carriers and retailers in the United States, but they are locked to certain carriers/networks.
The unlocked variants, however, are completely unlocked and are compatible with all major network carriers in the United States, including Verizon and Sprint. If that alone is not enticing enough, the unlocked variants are completely bloatware free. Heck, Samsung is even providing customers with the option of whether they want Samsung’s apps like Calculator, S Health, and Memo installed on the phone or not — these apps are not pre-loaded by default as they are on the international variant of the phone.
If you are a globetrotter, you will be glad to know that the unlocked Galaxy S7/edge supports almost all carriers in the world, including China Mobile.
The specs of the unlocked Galaxy S7 and S7 edge remain exactly the same as the carrier variants sold in the US: a 5.1/5.5-inch Quad HD Super AMOLED display, a quad-core Snapdragon 820 clocked at 2.15GHz, 4GB LPDDR4 RAM, 32GB UFS 2.0 storage, microSD card slot, and a 3000/3600mAh battery. The highly praised 12MP f/1.7 aperture shooter with Dual Pixel is also present at the rear, while the front houses a 5MP wide-angle selfie shooter. Oh, and not to forget: both phones also feature IP68 certification that makes them dust and water-resistant.
The unlocked Galaxy S7 will be sold for $669, while its edge sibling will set you back by $769. The phones will be available for purchase through Amazon, Samsung, Best Buy, eBay, and Target.
