A recent study reveals that two-thirds of people are willing to let artificial intelligence (AI) overrule their judgment, even in life-or-death scenarios. The findings, published in Scientific Reports, led by Professor Colin Holbrook from UC Merced’s Department of Cognitive and Information Sciences, highlight the urgent need for society to critically assess our reliance on AI systems.
“As a society, with AI accelerating so quickly, we need to be concerned about the potential for overtrust,” Holbrook said.
The Dangers of Overtrusting AI
The research involved a sample size of several hundred participants who were asked to control an armed drone that could fire a missile at a target displayed on a screen. Photos of eight target photos flashed in succession for less than a second each. The photos were marked with a symbol—one for an ally, one for an enemy.
“We calibrated the difficulty to make the visual challenge doable but hard,” Holbrook said. The screen then displayed one of the targets, unmarked, for which the subject had to search their memory and decide its fate.
After the person made their choice, a robot offered its opinion. “Yes, I think I saw an enemy check mark, too,” it might say. Or “I don’t agree. I think this image had an ally symbol.” The subject had two chances to confirm or change their choice as the robot added more commentary, never changing its assessment, i.e., “I hope you are right” or “Thank you for changing your mind.”
About 66% of participants allowed a robot to change their minds despite being warned that the AI’s advice was unreliable. It was also found it didn’t matter if the robot appeared more human or not. In follow-up interviews, participants revealed they took their decisions seriously, wanting to be right and not harm innocent people.
Implications Across Various Sectors
The study’s implications extend beyond military applications. In healthcare, for instance, a doctor relying too heavily on AI diagnostics might overlook critical symptoms, leading to misdiagnosis. In criminal justice, AI-driven predictive policing systems can perpetuate biases, resulting in unjust outcomes. Financial decisions based on flawed AI-generated simulations can lead to significant economic losses.
Preventing AI Overtrust and Misinformation
Automation bias, the tendency to favor suggestions from automated systems, plays a significant role in AI overtrust. The perceived objectivity and infallibility of AI make people more likely to trust it, even when it is wrong. “We see AI doing extraordinary things, and we think that because it’s amazing in this domain, it will be amazing in another. We can’t assume that,” Holbrook emphasized.
Overtrust in AI is not just a problem in high-stakes scenarios; it also accelerates the spread of misinformation. AI-generated content, often perceived as credible, can easily be shared as truth, exacerbating the issue. Instances of AI-generated falsehoods being accepted as fact are becoming increasingly common.
In preventing overtrust, designing transparent and accountable AI systems with explainability is crucial. Experts had been advocating for responsible AI development in recent years, emphasizing the need for ethical guidelines and regulatory frameworks.
While AI becomes more integrated into decision-making processes, it is imperative to maintain a critical perspective. Supporting responsible AI development and fostering public education about its limitations are vital steps forward. As Holbrook said, “We must be careful every time we hand AI another key to running our lives.”
