Why trust Greenbot
Sony and VAIO parted ways, and as a result VAIO can make smartphones now. The first of which is aptly named the VAIO Phone, and it’s coming to a small Japanese wireless carrier before the end of the month.
The VAIO Phone looks like a smartphone, in that it’s unassuming and probably won’t catch anyone’s eye in passing. It offers a 5-inch 1280×720 display, and there’s a 13-megapixel camera on the back. Inside, a 1.2GHz processor runs the show, along with 2GB of RAM and a battery measured in at 2500mAh. It offers 16GB of built-in storage and a microSD card slot, and it’s running Android 5.0 Lollipop out of the box.
The VAIO Phone will cost about $33 or 4,000 yen on a contract from Japan’s b-mobile, which will also net a customer unlimited data. Buying it outright means shelling out around $422, or 51,000 yen.
The VAIO Phone isn’t breathtaking by any means, but it’s a first effort on a small network in Japan, so perhaps a bigger effort from the newly single VAIO will be better at some point down the road.
