IP ratings are here to tell us just how water resistant a device is. But getting that rating isn’t necessarily cheap, even if it can get an obvious point across. And serve as a solid bullet point on the specs sheet. But OnePlus doesn’t think paying for that IP rating is worth it, so it’s skipping it.

In a teaser video posted on Twitter by the official OnePlus account, we get to see a nondescript device being dropped into a bucket of water. We can’t actually tell any of the details of the smartphone in question, so it’s possible this isn’t even a OnePlus 7. Still, OnePlus says “Waterproof ratings for phones cost you money. We just bought a bucket”, and called it good:

OnePlus CEO, Carl Pei, took to a forum post and added some context here. The executive says that having an IP rating would indeed help prove the OnePlus 7’s water resistance, but “the certification doesn’t help us communicate our focus on your real experience”. One could probably argue that the certification and IP rating does, in fact, help communicate a real world experience, but apparently Pei doesn’t share that mentality.

What’s more, Pei adds that the video is not a “bucket challenge”, and says that you should absolutely not dunk your future OnePlus 7 in a bucket of water. Pei also notes that the OnePlus standard warranty does not cover water damage.

So, got all that? OnePlus shows off a video of a device (presumably the OnePlus 7) being dunked in a bucket of water, says it’s next flagship is water resistant but won’t get it IP rated, and then tells you not to dunk your phone in a bucket of water because the OnePlus warranty won’t cover (potential) water damage.
