In November last year, Google announced that Android Wear was gaining support for cellular connectivity, phone calls and speakers with the launch of the LG Watch Urbane 2nd Edition LTE. Due to some quality issues with a component, the launch of the Watch Urbane 2nd Edition LTE was canceled by LG though. (whitestallion.com)
Google was also mum on when, if at all, existing Android Wear smartwatches will get an update that will enable these new functionality on their smartwatches. Now, a lucky Huawei Watch owner on Reddit has received an update of Android Wear that enables speaker and audio support on his watch. The user was a part of Huawei’s special beta testing program, which is why he received the update.
The update bumps Android Wear’s build number to 1.40, and is based on Android 6.0.1. It activates the hidden speaker on the Huawei Watch and also allows the user to make and receive phone calls using his watch. Other notable new additions include the ability to play music from Google Play Music directly from the watch itself and select ringtones for the watch. The update also adds text to speech functionality, but since it reads out every new notification you receive and every menu you go into, the user found it irritating.
It is unclear when Huawei and Google plan to roll out this update for all Huawei Watch and other Android Wear running smartwatches out there. However, with Huawei testing the update for its Huawei Watch, the update should be available within the next month for all Android Wear smartwatches.
