While OEMs like LG and Motorola have decided to stay away from Android Wear powered smartwatches for now, Swarovski has decided to enter the market with some help from Qualcomm. The premium watchmaker today announced that it will be launching its first Android Wear watch targeted for women in March at Baselworld 2017.
Swarovski’s teaser video announcing its smartwatch does not reveal any key details about it, except for the fact that it will be powered by a Qualcomm chip. It is likely that the smartwatch will be powered by Qualcomm’s latest Wear 2100 chipset, and the watch should run Android Wear 2.0 out of the box which comes with a number of new features and enhancements. These includes Android Pay with NFC support, new and improved watch faces, Smart Reply, support for standalone apps, and more.
Interestingly, Google is also expected to unveil its own “Nexus” smartwatches sometime in the first quarter of this year.
Android Wear smartwatches have not really taken off, so it will be interesting to see whether Swarovski manages to change that with its own smartwatch or not.
