Sony has just announced a new mid-range handset in its Xperia lineup — the Xperia M2 Aqua. As the name suggests, the handset is a water and dust-proof version of the Xperia M2 with an IP 65/68 certification.

This is the very maximum IP certification that can be awarded to any gadget, and the Xperia M2 is the world’s first smartphone to achieve it. Such an high IP rating means that the Xperia M2 Aqua is completely dust-proof and can also survive being under deep waters for an extended period of time.

Specs wise though, the handset is not really remarkable and packs in very modest specs:

  • 4.8-inch qHD (960 x 640) resolution display
  • Snapdragon 400 running at 1.2GHz
  • Adreno 305 GPU
  • 1GB oF RAM
  • 8GB storage space, microSD card slot
  • 8MP Exmor RS camera with an LED flash
  • Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, NFC, LTE
  • 2300mAh non-removable battery
  • Android 4.4.2 KitKat

The handset will be available in black or white colors in Latin America, Asia Pacific and Europe from the Autumn of 2014.
