Rugged devices come in all shapes and sizes these days, despite the fact many of them still look the part — like Kyocera’s Brigadier. Sony, though, has been aiming to make their devices waterproof, and other element-proof in some capacity or another for many years now. Luckily for one owner, the Xperia Z2 is no different.

According to a report from Swedish-based press, Alexander Maxén from Gothenburg was visiting a large body of water and enjoying some water-skiing when he accidentally knocked his Xperia Z2 off the seat of his watercraft, and watched it disappear into the dark depths below. The sea bed is reportedly 10 meters deep, so Maxén wasn’t able to retrieve the device on his own.

Maxén called the phone when he returned to shore, and shockingly enough it actually still had a signal. Six weeks would go by before a friend of his went scuba diving in the same area, and was able to find the device. Perhaps unsurprisingly, the device managed to survive the fall, but not completely unscathed. There were some visible markings along the headphone port, and the back glass was shattered. The surprise came when they plugged the phone in to charge it up, and the LED indicator came to life. After it was charged, they tried to see how much of the phone worked, and every function worked as it should. They could even make calls.

Considering the situation, the depth and the length of time the phone was under water, this is amazing. Of course, no one would suggest that you should try this with your own device. Keep in mind that Sony says the device can survive under water at depths of 1.5 meters of fresh water, and for only 30 minutes.
