Sony smartphones might not be doing particularly well but that is not stopping the company from unveiling a new flagship smartphone every six months. After the Xperia XZ2 from earlier this year, Sony has now unveiled the XZ3 at IFA 2018 in Berlin.

The XZ3 is an iterative upgrade over the XZ2 at best. The primary difference is that it now features a 6-inch curved QHD+ 18:9 aspect ratio HDR display. This is a taller and higher resolution display found on the XZ2 which featured a 5.7-inch FHD+ LCD display. Despite the switch to a curved OLED panel, the overall design of the handset remains the same from the rear.

Internally, the XZ3 packs the same hardware as the XZ2. This means we are looking at a Snapdragon 845 chipset, 4GB RAM, 64GB storage, and a microSD card slot. The battery capacity has seen a modest increase to 3300mAh from 3180mAh found on the XZ2. It features support for both USB-Power Delivery and Sony’s own Qnovo fast charging tech. Other specs of the handset include IP65/68 certification, Gorilla Glass 5 panels at the front and rear, Wi-Fi ac, LTE, Stamina mode, Bluetooth 5.0, and more.

The cameras on the handset also remain the same as its predecessor. The rear continues to house a 19MP f/2.0 shooter with 1.22um large pixels. Other specs of the camera include PDAF, laser AF, 4K HDR video recording, and the ability to record slow-motion videos at 960fps. While the camera hardware is the same, Sony touts improvements to the camera processing algorithm. The front selfie shooter has seen an upgrade and now packs a 13MP sensor with f/1.9 aperture and AF.

The only highlight of the XZ3 is Side Sense. Its a gesture system that is capable of detecting taps and swipes on the curved OLED edges. The Side Sense feature will automatically bring up a contextual menu comprising of your frequently used apps and system setting shortcuts. It can also launch the camera app automatically when it detects the phone is being held in landscape orientation.

Impressively, the Sony XZ3 is the first phone announced to run on Android 9.0 Pie out of the box. While it will feature Sony’s skin on top, it is rather lightweight and not particularly intrusive. The Sony XZ3 is expected to go on sale for $900 from the end of September.
