Sony Android 6.0 Masrhmallow

Sony today has provided a list of devices that it will be updating to Android 6.0 Marshmallow. The list includes all the major flagship Xperia devices from the Japanese company launched over the last couple of years, except for its Xperia Z and Z1 series of devices.

Sony had launched the Xperia Z in early 2013 and followed it up with the Xperia Z1 and Z1 Compact in late 2013. The latter devices ran Android 4.2 Jelly Bean out of the box and were only recently updated to Android 5.1 Lollipop. While it is understandable that Sony decided against updating the 2.5 year+ old Xperia Z to Marshmallow, it is a bummer that it will not be updating its Z1 series of devices to the latest version of Android, as well.

The LG-made Nexus 5, which was launched around the same time as the Xperia Z1 and packs in similar internals, is already receiving its Marshmallow update, so Sony really does not have any solid reason for not updating the handset to Android 6.0.

The devices that will be receiving the Android 6.0 Marshmallow update from Sony are as follows:

  • Xperia Z5
  • Xperia Z5 Compact
  • Xperia Z5 Premium
  • Xperia Z4 Tablet
  • Xperia Z3+
  • Xperia Z3
  • Xperia Z3 Compact
  • Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact
  • Xperia Z2
  • Xperia Z2 Tablet
  • Xperia M5
  • Xperia C5 Ultra
  • Xperia M4 Aqua
  • Xperia C4

The company also mentions in its announcement that it will be bringing some new features and improving the user experience on its devices with the Marshmallow update. It did not, however, provide any timeframe as to when it will start rolling out the update for its devices though.
