Android 5.1 Lollipop for Sony Xperia Z

Sony today announced that it will start rolling out the Android 5.1 Lollipop update for its Xperia Z series of devices from July.

The list of devices includes the Xperia Z, Z1, Z2, Z3 series of phones and tablets.

The Japanese company had taken its own sweet time on bringing Lollipop to its Xperia devices, so it is nice to see the company stepping up it game and committing to rolling out the Android 5.1 update to its devices from July.

In addition to its Xperia Z devices, Sony will be updating the Xperia T2 Ultra and Xperia C3 to Android 5.1 from July as well. The company also announced that it will be directly updating the Xperia M2 and the Xperia M2 Aqua to Android 5.1, though its update will land only after the roll out for the Xperia Z devices start.

Sony has been usually very slow in rolling out updates for its devices, and it was among the last major OEM to update its devices to Lollipop. Thus, a July timeframe to update its flagship devices to Android 5.1 is actually pretty good especially when you consider that the Moto X is the only handset outside of Nexus devices to run the latest version of Lollipop.
