Sony’s flagship phones, the Xperia Z and ZL, are good, really good, but they’re probably going to get forgotten thanks to Samsung’s enormous GS4 marketing budget and the internet’s deep love for HTC’s One. Now that being said, we still have more than eight months to go until the year is out, which means Sony has enough time to wow people again.

According to the Xperia Blog, the Japanese company is going to release two phones later this year that are going to be ridiculously high end. Starting with the 6.44 inch “Togari”, it’ll have a 1080p screen and look very similar to the Xperia Z. It’s probably not going to sell in the tens of millions due to the sheer size of the thing, but it’ll impress people looking for a device that can serve both as a tablet and a smartphone.

The second device, “Honami”, is where things get interesting. It’ll have a 5 inch 1080p screen that uses Sony’s Triluminos technology. What is that? Read this article on the MIT Technology Review website for the full details. My best attempt at a one sentence description is: OLED like performance, but built using LCD technology.

Other goodies include a 20 megapixel camera with Carl Zeiss optics, Xenon flash, and Qualcomm’s ridiculously powerful Snapdragon 800 chip paired up with 2 GB of RAM. The phone should launch by the end of Q3, meaning it’ll be out during roughly the same time that Samsung announces the third generation Galaxy Note.

Is all this too good to be true? I don’t think so. Sony is hungry. They’re tired of not being taken seriously when it comes to smartphones. They used to be one of the world’s most respected companies, but they lost that image years ago to competitors like Samsung and Apple.

This year is their time to shine. Again.
