Android Oreo

Sony today provided a list of Xperia devices which it will be updating to Android 8.0 Oreo. The company’s announcement only provides a list of devices that will be getting the update, with no mention on when users of these handsets should expect the handset to land.

Sony will be updating its following Xperia devices to Android 8.0 Oreo:

  • Xperia X
  • Xperia X Performance
  • Xperia XZ
  • Xperia X Compact
  • Xperia XZ Premium
  • Xperia XZs
  • Xperia XA1
  • Xperia XA1 Ultra
  • Xperia XA1 Plus
  • Xperia Touch

If the above list is anything to go by, Sony is officially ending support for all its Xperia Z series of handsets. The last Z series handset launched by Sony was the Xperia Z5 and Z5 Premium at IFA in 2015. So, the handsets fall just outside of the 2-year update window which most OEMs are striving to offer for their flagship devices.

The company only says that it will be updating its above-mentioned devices to Oreo as soon as possible, though it fails to provide any estimated timeframe as to when the update will land.

Sony also became the first Android OEM to announce smartphones running Android 8.0 Oreo out of the box: the Xperia XZ1 and XZ1 Compact.
