Today Sony announced it will discontinue software updates for a list of older Xperia devices, spanning back to 2012. This change will go in effect immediately for anyone still in a Xperia handset between 18-24 months old.The list of phones include the following:

  • Xperia Arc S
  • Xperia S
  • Xperia SL
  • Xperia Ion
  • Xperia Acro S
  • Xperia Go
  • Xperia P
  • Xperia J
  • Xperia Miro
  • Xperia Sola
  • Xperia Tipo
  • Xperia U

Unfortunately, the Snapdragon S3 chips inside these phones have become obsolete. For that reason Sony did what it had to do by cutting off resources, credit should be given to them for being at least transparent about its decision. If you happen to own one of these phones listed, then all isn’t lost — there’s always the rooting option to upload ROMs made by third party developers. That way your phone can stay fresh a bit longer.
