Just a week after Google released Android 4.4 KitKat, Sony has announced its plan on updating its fleet of Xperia devices to Android 4.3 Jelly Bean and Android 4.4 KitKat.
The company will first start updating a bunch of Xperia devices – the Xperia Z, ZL, ZR, Tablet Z, Xperia SP, Z Ultra and Z1 – to Android 4.3 Jelly Bean from next month. Keep in mind that this ETA is only for the unlocked variant of the devices. The update for the carrier locked devices can take considerably longer to arrive. The Xperia T, TX and V will also be directly getting the Android 4.3 update from next month.
Regarding its Android 4.4 KitKat update schedule, the company did not provide much information except that it will be updating the Xperia Z, ZL, Tablet Z, Z Ultra and Z1 to the latest version of Android. The company did not provide any ETA as to when the update should land, but chances of it being available anytime before early next year looks bleak.
Sony has been traditionally slow in updating its devices to the latest version of Android, and looking at its above announcement, the company has once again done the same mistake. For a flagship device, it is unacceptable that Z1 owners would have to likely wait until early next year for the KitKat update when Samsung, HTC and Motorola would be updating their handset by the end of this year itself.
