Home security company SimpliSafe has rolled out its new Active Guard Outdoor Protection service, combining AI technology with live agents to monitor properties and prevent potential break-ins. This service, launched today, October 15, uses a new AI-powered camera and real-time human oversight to address security threats for homeowners across the U.S.

SimpliSafe’s Senior VP of Product, Hooman Shahidi, explained that the system filters out trusted faces and directs any suspicious activity to a live agent who can assess the situation.

Shahidi elaborated, stating that agents engage with intruders “in a friendly manner,” escalating only if necessary. If the person is identified as a delivery driver, for example, the agent will monitor the situation and notify the homeowner of a package delivery. If a potential break-in is detected, agents can directly contact the police, offering immediate protection and real-time updates through app notifications.

The service is powered by SimpliSafe’s new Outdoor Camera 2, which launched alongside Active Guard. The camera costs $199.99 and offers enhanced on-device processing, better night vision, and improved audio. It must be continuously powered to function with Active Guard, but SimpliSafe customers who own the older outdoor camera can receive a discount when upgrading to the new version.

SimpliSafe CEO Christian Cerda highlighted the company’s goal of reducing false alarms, a major issue in the security industry. “Ninety percent of alarms are false,” Cerda stated, adding that response times often exceed 10 minutes. The new service aims to provide first responders with better information, enabling them to prioritize genuine threats more effectively.

Cerda also emphasized that the use of AI could help shift the role of home security from reactive to proactive. “We are adding generative AI to help understand situational context,” he said, explaining that the AI can filter out benign situations while alerting agents to potential dangers. The AI analyzes common behaviors, such as those of lawn services or passersby, and distinguishes them from more suspicious activity like property scanning, allowing agents to intervene more effectively.

The Active Guard service costs $49.99 per month for overnight monitoring or $79.99 per month for 24/7 coverage. For comparison, Ring offers a similar service priced at $100 per month. SimpliSafe’s offering includes professional alarm monitoring and indoor live monitoring, adding extra layers of security for its users.

SimpliSafe’s new service is now available for all U.S.-based customers, with both the camera and monitoring subscriptions accessible through the company’s website.
