Despite having limited benefits, Quad HD/2K displays are becoming a commonplace in high-end Android devices. Samsung has released two flagship devices in the last six months with Quad HD display, and LG, HTC and others have also jumped on bandwagon.
Thanks to Sharp though, 2K displays on smartphones are soon going to be a passé. The company has just announced the world’s first 5.5-inch display for smartphones with 4K/Ultra HD (2160 x 3840) resolution. This translates into a mind-boggling, eye-popping density of 806 pixels per inch.
Since the display is based on IGZO technology, it should consume the same levels of power as existing 2K displays. The display also has extremely narrow bezels thereby allowing OEMs to reduce the bezel space on their devices.
The panel is scheduled to enter into mass production in 2016, so expect it to make its way to smartphones towards the end of 2016 or early 2017.
The extremely high pixel density offered by 2K/Quad HD displays is still of some benefit in regions like China and Japan, but a 4K display on a smartphone provides absolutely no improvement. Do you think 4K displays on smartphones make sense? Drop in a comment and let us know your thoughts.
