We have been hearing about Samsung’s plans to launch a foldable flagship phone for quite a while now. The latest report now points to the Korean company taking some steps to put the phone with a foldable display into mass production.
Samsung has shared its plans with relevant parts manufacturer as it is the usual industry trend. The plan points to the parts being manufactured from November. Samsung has seemingly ordered around 500,000 to 2,000,000 units which is far lower than the millions of units it orders for its flagship Galaxy S products. This points to Samsung treading cautiously with its first foldable phone and treating it as a pilot project to assess consumer interest in it.
The ordered parts will form the base of the phone, though they don’t give an idea about its design as that is yet to be finalized. This is because Samsung is still testing prototype units with infolding and outfolding displays, and it will take a final decision on the design of the device in June.
The report further points to the foldable smartphone turning into the size of a Galaxy Note device when it is completely unfolded. It would come with two 3.5-inch panels which when combined would form a smartphone with a 7-inch display.
As per a source from a partner company cited int he article, if the mass production of parts starts in November, it is possible that Samsung would launch the foldable smartphone early next year. This does contradict other rumors and reports which pointed to the handset launching towards the end of this year. Samsung had apparently shown a demo of a smartphone with a curved display at CES 2018 to select partners behind closed doors.
Our Take
Reports and rumors about Samsung’s foldable smartphone have been floating around for a long time now. While there is a clear interest in a smartphone with a foldable display, its success or failure depends on how Samsung’ decides to implements it. So, it is better to take all rumors about the company’s foldable smartphone with a pinch of salt unless we actually see some concrete leaks confirming its existence. (simpleeverydaymom)
