Earlier this month, a report claimed that Samsung was working on a Bixby-powered speaker. Turns out, the company has decided not to go ahead with the plan.

Codenamed Vega, Samsung has decided not to launch a Bixby-powered speaker as it does not view them as marketable right now. In South Korea, the market for a smart speaker is too small while the US market is dominated by Amazon Echo. And with Apple launching its Siri-powered HomePod smart speaker later in the year, Samsung’s Bixby speaker would have hardly had a chance to capture the market.

“Samsung currently does not view Al speakers as marketable, as the global market is already dominated by unbeatable Amazon and the Korean market is too small to make profits,” an anonymous source told The Korea Herald.

Another reason behind Samsung ditching its smart speaker ambitions, for now, is that it has very limited number of AI experts working for it. This has already slowed down the development of Bixby’s English language pack and voice recognition. It was only today, three months after the Galaxy S8 first went on sale that Bixby Voice has made its way to the US. And there’s still no word from Samsung on when it will be available in other regions of the world.

Samsung is working on improving its AI though by integrating it in other smart appliances it manufactures, including refrigerators. This would allow the company to quickly launch a smart speaker down the line if their adoption among consumers booms.
