Recently, news on whether or not Samsung would be creating a smart speaker, a market that is quickly finding favor amongst consumers, has gone back-and-forth, first suggesting the company would, and then, soon after, that the company had shelved the idea.
Now, speaking with CNBC, Samsung’s President of Mobile DJ Koh has confirmed that the company is indeed hard at work on a smart speaker, and that the company sees a bright future for devices that use the Samsung ecosystem:
“Maybe soon we will announce it. I am already working on it. As I mentioned I wanted to provide a fruitful user experience at home with Samsung devices, and I want to be moving quite heavily on it.”
Unfortunately, Koh wouldn’t divulge any real details about the upcoming smart speaker. Then again, based on his comments, while Samsung might be hard at work on the device, there might not be a lot to talk about. We already know the company plans on unveiling a new smartwatch at IFA 2017, so it doesn’t sound like the smart speaker will see the light of day next week.
Apple will be releasing its own smart speaker, the HomePod, in December of this year, so if Samsung wants to go head-to-head with their biggest competitor, we should be learning more about Samsung’s smart speaker endeavor sooner rather than later. Until then, for fans of Samsung’s Bixby feature and smart speakers in general, one has to hope the plans don’t get cancelled ahead of launch.
