Word on the street is that Samsung is planning on launching a Galaxy S10 variant that supports 5G. And it sounds like it may be a perfect candidate for Verizon’s 5G network rollout plans.

On Monday, Verizon officially announced that it will be launching its first 5G smartphone in the first half of 2019. The big red wireless carrier isn’t ready to go into any specifics right now, or give us an exact launch date, but we should see it before the end of June of next year, at least. What we do know is that Verizon will be teaming up with Samsung to bring that handset to market, but we don’t know which model that will be just yet.

The announcement does confirm that the unannounced handset will be using Qualcomm’s Snapdragon Mobile Platform, though. The Snapdragon X50 5G NR modem will be inside the device, which isn’t too surprising in the slightest. We should see more of what Qualcomm has to offer with that particular 5G modem at next week’s Snapdragon Technology Summit.

Verizon’s initial 5G network rollout will begin in “early 2019”, but the carrier isn’t diving into launch market details just yet. The network says the 5G coverage will expand quickly from that point on, so Verizon will hopefully have quite a bit to offer throughout 2019.

Whether or not adopting 5G will be great for consumers right out of the gate remains to be seen. In the past, brand new network technologies haven’t had the smoothest of launches, and it’s possible 5G sees a similar fate next year. Still, the speed improvements should make for a worthwhile change for the early adopters.
