Smartphones with 128GB of internal storage are still pretty hard to come by, and the few that are available are high-end devices with hefty price tags. But Samsung is hoping to change that by bringing its new 128GB chip to more affordable midrange phones.
Samsung’s new Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge are its first devices that are available with 128GB of internal storage, but they certainly won’t be its last.
The South Korean company has announced a new 128GB, 3-bit per cell NAND memory chip that is specifically for midrange devices. It uses the eMMC 5.0 standard used by many of the device on sale today, and it is capable of delivering 260Mbps read speeds.
That’s not as fast as the new UFS 2.0 storage introduced with the Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge, which is capable of reaching up to 350Mbps, but it’s still fast enough for a smartphone — especially a midrange one.
This could confirm suspicions that Samsung is looking to phase out the microSD card slot. The Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge are the first flagship Samsung devices without one, and fans have feared they won’t be the first.
But for now, Samsung’s new 128GB chips don’t have a release date.
